Birthday is a special occasion for a person. My special day fell today (September 22). Generally I don’t like celebrating birthdays. Birthdays come and go every year and I scarcely remember the things done on that day. But this birthday will linger in my memories forever. My roomies made me to cut cakes and they presented me a nice gift. And I received phone calls from friends around 12. Some of my friends share the birthday with me – Rajathi, Vivek, Dhivya, Swarna, Mahendran and Arun. I wished them too. And today, the birthday mails started flooding. My team mates composed nice birthday mails for me. It was totally unexpected and it made me very happy. And there were some disappointments too. Some distant but close ones forgot to wish. Some near ones dint wish me!
You may feel what’s special in it. All these are usual and most of us have these experiences. I did something different for the birthday this year. Yesterday, I went to BalaJothi, a centre for the disabled along with members of DISHA. Fredric, the founder’s son (Rahul) was affected with autism, cerebral palsy and mental retardation at a tender age of 3. The doctors told that he would be bed ridden and would not be able to do anything. He would not be able to speak, walk or think on his own. Nothing could shake Fredric. He took it as a challenge and started training the child on every aspect. And now, Rahul is 7 years old. He walks, understands five languages and operates computers too. That is really a medical miracle. This happened only because of the love which his dad and his grandparents showered on him. We were so moved to hear Fredric speak about his experiences. Kudos to you Fredric. He also provides special education to 30 disabled children. We provided funds to them. Though a small amount, we should understand that little drops of water makes a mighty ocean. From now, I decided to regularly help people in need. Every one of us should do the best possible by us, at least on our birthdays. In this way, we can surely become smile in each and every individual.

The deepest desire of each and every human is to love and be loved
I am a member of DISHA foundation. Me along with five other members visited Asha Niketan yesterday. It is a home which gives the people with mental handicaps a new ray of hope. The people there are really cared so much. And they also involve in creative activities like candle making, craft work, bamboo work etc. Those people were abandoned by their own family members and now they have got a new home. A place were they are loved and cared for. It is managed by Katherine, a French lady. Kudos to her work, her energy, her passion to make a difference in peoples lives. Many people have a desire to help others. They stop with it. But she has gone an extra mile and serves people. She chose to be single and be with the people. That’s really great and she has to be very much appreciated for it.
As Mahatma Gandhi said, “A man’s greatness lies not in his mind, but in his heart” we should also play our part to make a difference in peoples lives. The happiness you get by helping others is much more than what you get by other things like succeeding in your career, obtaining material possessions etc. Such kind of happiness is short lived. But if you make some one happy, if you make a difference in some ones lives the happiness stays longer. So, decide in what ways you can make a difference in people’s lives. It can be as simple as a smile. You smile has a great power and it can create great miracles in people. You can understand it only by experience. Start your day with smile. When you meet a person, smile and greet him/her with a good morning.

Work Work Work
At times people become overwhelmed with work that they do stupid things. I don’t say that I’m always sane. Some of the things which I have done…
Adding salt to tea
Using access card for my home
Giving ATM card in the place of Sodexho card.
Extreme stupidity rite? You must also have done one of these.
We should not allow work to overwhelm us. There should be a proper balance between work and personal life. I too wish to follow this but some times it is not possible. Many of my friends and relatives scold me for not following this. I wish a day would come when I follow a proper schedule.
And in spite of all these, I enjoy work. There is a steep learning curve here...
Of course, we can achieve things only if we put effort...

Think of participating in Olympics!
I used to participate in sports in our School and College. Got few prizes in running. (People used to say that I dint run and it was the air which helped me to run). No sports activities in companies. But I do sporting in Company sometimes. How???
Sometimes, I start from my desk just 10 seconds before our company bus departs from Office. Though my team mates ask me to not to hurry and go by the next bus, I run to catch the bus. After catching the bus I feel that I have climbed Everest. My happiness knows no bounds after grabbing a seat.
So I think I am good enough to participate in Olympics or Marathon race. Am I? I can hear many people telling, "This is toooo much".

Dog !!! Oooo God….
The other day I was going to my home in Cab. It was late night. The driver dropped me on main road. I had to walk a bit to reach my home. Since the road is narrow, cabs can’t reach till my home gate. I was approaching the gate. Four dogs were standing to welcome me. O my god! That was a breath taking experience. I was thinking, “Should I take the other road” or “Should I fight with them and enter inside the home gate”. I didn’t choose option two since I am not that brave. :-). Then I thought of taking the other route which leads to my home and went back to the main road. Luckily, The driver was standing there. He escorted me, droved the dogs and I went in happily. Thanks a million to him. And remember, there were two other persons who accompanied me in the Cab, my team mates Dhivya and Amal. They were laughing like anything. It looks funny now but whenever I require go home late nights, my heart beat increases. !
Some other incident... I was nearing home. There was only one dog trying to chase me, bite me or whatever. (Who knows what it was planning!). I dint know what to do. I thought of giving it a biscuit to eat and get in to my home. But I had none. Luckily found an orbit chewing gum. It was raining so heavily too. I took the orbit, closed the gate and threw the orbit outside the gate. And then only I remembered. “O God. It is a bubble gum. If the dog eats it, it will die. I did a blunder”. The dog smelled it and didn’t eat the Orbit. Thank God. I went in happily.

Happiness!
There is real happiness involved in making others happy. Working in software industry has its own pressures and challenges. We have to do something to make ourselves and also our surroundings pleasant. Productivity increases when you are happy and calm.
Smile! Smile is a curve which sets everything straight. Smile at people. Your smile should be a genuine one. Start your day saying a vibrant good morning to people whom you happen to see. There are fewwwww medicines in the world which are as powerful as laughter.
Well. I compose birthday mails for the team and send it out when their day comes. It takes some time to gather information about people and compose something funny and interesting about them. I see the smile in their face once they read the mails, especially composed for them. The recent one was for my cubicle mate. He was so happy to read the mail. The entire team wished him, teased him and there was so much of laughter around. He said “You made my day”.
Happiness is contagious. Be happy and make others happy too.
